George R. Atwood Jr.

George R. Atwood Jr., 91, formerly of 64 Dresser Ave., died yesterday at Timberlyn Heights Nursing Center. Born in Great Barrington on June 15, 1913, son of George R. Atwood Sr. and Mary Hart Atwood, he attended local schools. An Army veteran, he served in the Panama Canal Zone from 1931 to 1933. Mr. Atwood was employed by the Massachusetts Highway Department, retiring in 1978. He also had been custodian for St. Peter's Church from 1959 to 1963, and again from 1975 to 1983. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and an avid golfer. He and his wife, the former Helen Verchot, would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary May 6. They were married in Corpus Christi Church. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Thomas P. Atwood of Great Barrington and Richard B. Atwood of Housatonic; three daughters, Elizabeth Boddie and Teresa Bannon, both of Great Barrington, and Mary Ryan of Hanson; a brother, the Rev. Wilbur Atwood of New Orleans; 19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for George Atwood Jr., who died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 10:30 at St. Peter's Church by his brother, the Rev. Wilbur Atwood. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 22, at a calling hour from 9 to 10 before the funeral at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. Expressions of sympathy in George's memory may be made to the St. Peter's Ramp Fund in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
