Thomas Patrick Fogarty

Thomas Patrick Fogarty, 85, of 132 Christian Hill Road and Lake Placid, Fla., died Sunday at Florida Hospital in Lake Placid. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 21, 1919, son of Thomas and Roselle Dolly Fogarty, he attended schools in New York and attended Columbia University. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Mr. Fogarty was a member of the Fire Department of New York, retiring as a lieutenant in 1964. He then owned and operated a transportation business on Long Island, N.Y., until retiring again in 1992. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Ireland. He was an avid tennis player and a reader of history and economics. He leaves eight sons, Roger Fogarty and Thomas Fogarty, both of Lake Placid; Dennis Fogarty of Arlington, Va., Brian Fogarty and Gerard Fogarty, both of Turks and Caicos Islands, Timothy Fogarty of Becket; Matthew Fogarty of Sheffield and Kenneth Fogarty of Stockbridge; a sister, Muriel Hunt of Boynton Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Thomas Fogarty, who died Jan. 16, 2005, will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, Great Barrington, by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall. A burial service will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Housatonic. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. After his retirement, the onerous job of keeping the refrigerator stocked for his eight sons was still a pressing responsibility and so Mr. Fogarty purchased and operated a transportation business on Long Island. Ultimately, the boys became men and he was able to retire completely in 1992. Tom was all about family; his love was unconditional. His favorite retirement pastime was to travel and spend time with his eight sons and their families. An avid tennis player and consummate reader of history and economics, his exuberance for knowledge and his enthusiastic zest for expressing his unique viewpoints never wavered. Tom lived his life as if his glass were always at least half full; shortly before he passed, he woke briefly and said to his son, Gerry, "We have been very fortunate." Indeed, his family and friends would agree, we have all been very fortunate thanks to his positive influences. To paraphrase an old Irish verse, we will grieve not nor speak of him with tears; we will laugh and talk of him as though he were beside us. He loved us so as we did him. Twas truly heaven to have had him here. May God bless him and keep him till we meet again. He was predeceased by his brother, John Fogarty.
