John J. Scapin Sr.

John J. Scapin Sr., 59, of 43 Pearl St. died yesterday at home after a long illness. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 13, 1941, son of Eugene and Angelina Maule Scapin, he grew up in Lee and moved to Great Barrington in 1964. He was employed by the Massachusetts Highway Department for 21 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed baseball and was active in coaching Little League and Babe Ruth in Great Barrington in the 1970s. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed taking trips to casinos. He leaves his wife of 37 years, the former Carol Lockenwitz, whom he married Feb. 22, 1964, in Canaan, Conn.; three sons, Victor Scapin and Tim Scapin, both of Housatonic, and John J. Scapin Jr. of Mill River; a daughter, Angela Kimball of Mill River; six brothers, Tony Scapin, Joe Scapin, Mario Scapin and George Scapin, all of Lee, and Victor Scapin and Gene Scapin, both of Pittsfield; two sisters, Anna Touponce of Lee and Libra Scapin of Colorado, and 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, May 11, at HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Earle Goss, pastor of North Egremont Baptist Church, officiating at 10 a.m. Family will receive family and friends on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of the HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Martin.
