Richard L. George

Richard L. George, 82, of 38 Fisk Road died Sunday morning at home after a long illness. Born in Adams on Jan. 16, 1923, son of Louis J. and Jamellia Shaker George, he was a 1941 graduate of the former Adams High School, where he was a member of the football team. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with Headquarters Company, 6th Armored Battalion, 37th Infantry Division in the Po Valley, Rome/Arno, Naples, Foggia and North Appenines campaigns in Italy. After four years, he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1945. He was pictured in combat gear on the cover of Time magazine, portraying a typical GI. Mr. George joined his father in the operation of the Commercial Street Market. He retired as proprietor of the store in 1986. He was a communicant of the Parishes of Notre Dame-St. Thomas and St. Stanislaus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 160 and Elks Lodge 1335. He enjoyed playing the clarinet with local bands. His wife, the former Lorraine S. Francis, whom he married April 17, 1955, died March 27, 1998. He leaves a daughter, Denise Svenconis of Boylston; two sisters, Doris Koczela of Adams and Jeane Betros of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated for the life of Richard L. George, who died Jan. 23, 2005, on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 10 in St. Thomas' Church by the Rev. Daniel Boyle. A prayer service will be offered that morning at 9:15 before the Mass at MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME. A visitation period will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Memorial donations are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital through the funeral home. He also leaves his son-in-law, Bob; brother-in-law, Edward P. Koczela, and grandchildren Kristin M. and R.J. Svenconis. Predeceased by siblings Alfred George, Genevieve Hajjar and Martha George.
