Carleton Horton Mott

Carleton Horton Mott, 96, of Main Street died Saturday evening at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where he had resided for a few months. Born in Far Rockaway, Long Island, N.Y., on Feb. 21, 1908, son of Guy and Viola Horton Mott, he was a graduate of New York University College of Fine Arts. He moved to South Egremont in 1961 and to Otis in 1983. He also maintained a home in Lake Worth, Fla. An Army veteran of World War II, he served for four years in the Pacific theater. Mr. Mott was a stockbroker and had headed a public relations firm in New York City. He was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Great Barrington and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Otis. He enjoyed entertaining, going to the races, playing bridge and traveling. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Berkshire County Historical Society. His family was among the first to settle Long Island, arriving from England in 1665. He leaves a nephew, David Mott of Northville, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Carleton Mott, who died Jan. 22, 2005, will be Wednesday at 1 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. Calling hours will be Wednesday from noon until the time of the service. Burial will be Thursday in Trinity Church Churchyard, Hewlett, Long Island. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth in 1979, and a brother, Benjamin. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He also leaves three distant cousins, and several close friends, including Reggie Taylor of South Egremont. He was heir to the colonial Mott family. His ancestors owned 8,000 acres of land on Long Island, much of which was confiscated by the American government after the Revolution, regardless of the fact that the Mott Iron Works made cannons and other hardware for the Revolutionary Army.
