Ferdinando J. Berti

Ferdinando J. Berti, 86, of 8 Potter St. died Wednesday evening at the North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Cheshire on Sept. 24, 1918, son of the late Guiseppe and Adele Francisconi Berti, he attended Cheshire and Adams schools, graduating from the former Adams High School in 1937. Mr. Berti was a Naval radio chief petty officer during World War II. He also served in the Massachusetts National Guard Company M. He worked briefly for the Arnold Print Works in Adams and GE in Pittsfield before a 33-year career as a John Hancock Life Insurance agent, retiring in 1978. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Adams. Mr. Berti was a football player in high school and played on a number of semi-professional area football teams. He was a Berkshire County Football official for over 30 years, and a founding father of the Adams Pop Warner football program in 1959. He was also a member of the former Adams High School Football Dad's club. In addition, he was past president of the White Collar Workers representing insurance agents, past president of the Adams Sportsman Hound and Hunt Club, Trout Unlimited, Adams American Legion Post 160, and the Adams Turners. He served on the Adams board of registrars of voters, where he also served many years as chairman. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His wife, the former Bernadette Morys, whom he married Nov. 7, 1942, died Oct. 8, 1999. He leaves two sons, Richard Berti of Adams and Ronald Berti; two brothers, Paul Berti of Cheshire and Dan Aldo Berti of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ferdinando J. Berti will take place Monday, Feb. 14, at 9 from the TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Stanislaus Church in Adams. Celebrated by the Rev. David Raymond, pastor of St. Mary's of Assumption Church in Cheshire. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 4 to 7. Donations in his memory can be made to the Adams/Cheshire Educational Partnership or the Adams Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by three brothers, Victor Berti of California, Harry Berti of Cheshire and Edward Berti of Italy. He leaves grandchildren Andrea and Scott Berti, both of Adams; two daughters-in-law Suzanne Chapman and Cynthia Berti; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends, including Sylvia Mendel.
