Raymond B. "Rip" Estes

Raymond B. "Rip" Estes, 97, of 130 East Windsor Road died Tuesday at Craneville Place in Dalton, where he had resided for a month. Born in Windsor on May 31, 1907, son of William C. and Bertha Smith Estes, he attended local schools and the former Dalton High School. Mr. Estes was employed by the Massachusetts Highway Department and retired as road superintendent for the town of Windsor. After retiring in 1962, he worked as a groundskeeper at the Country Club of Pittsfield, Wahconah Country Club and the Skyline Country Club. He was a past master of the Globe Lodge of Masons, which he joined in 1932, and a charter member of the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department. He played in a Friday pitch league for many years. He also enjoyed gardening and reading Westerns. He and his wife, the former Bernice Sturtevant, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last Nov. 28. They were married in East Greenbush, N.Y., on Thanksgiving Day, 1929. Besides his wife, a former town clerk, he leaves two daughters, Marjorie Limburg of Dalton and Joan Crandall of Kingman, Ariz., seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Masonic funeral service for friends and family of Raymond B. Estes, who died Feb. 22, 2005, will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. Burial will be in the spring in Shaw Cemetery in Windsor. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7. Among survivors are his grandchildren, Karen L. Smith, Fred Limburg, Wayne Crandall, Mark Crandall, Bonnie Black and Donna Packard. Memorial donations may be made to the Windsor Volunteer Firemen's Association, or the charity of choice, in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. He was predeceased by a grandson, William E. Limburg, and five brothers, Ralph, Lawrence, Howard, Henry and Lincoln.
