Madeline C. Avery

Madeline C. Avery, 93, of 145 South Road died Sunday at Craneville Place of Dalton, where she had resided for three weeks. She was a former member of the Peru School and Building Committee and served as town auditor. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 11, 1907, daughter of Saverio and Maria Frusciente, she attended Peru schools. She also attended Berkshire Community College. Mrs. Avery was employed by GE for several years and by the former Ashmere Manor Nursing Home in Hinsdale as a licensed nurses' aide for 10 years. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Hinsdale and a member of its Altar and Rosary Sodality. She was active in the dedication of the Peru school and, in 1997, was feted as the oldest town resident. Mrs. Avery enjoyed cooking, making Christmas wreaths, picking blueberries, gardening, knitting, crocheting and making her famous zucchini relish. Her husband, William Avery, whom she married in 1934, died March 5, 1986. She leaves a daughter, Charlotte A. Huntoon of Hinsdale; a sister, Carmella Oakes of Peru; a brother, Domenic Frusciente of Peru; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rachael Avery Burnham, who died in 1983. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Patrick's Church in Hinsdale celebrated by the Rev. R. Joseph LeVay, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Calling hours at Dery-Foley Funeral Home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Peru Volunteer Fire Department or to the Hinsdale Ambulance Fund, both in care of the funeral home. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rachael Avery Burnham, in 1983, and by two brothers, Joseph and Martin Frusciente.
