James B. Ormsbee

James B. Ormsbee, 78, of 319 South St. died Tuesday at home. Born in Great Barrington on Sept. 29, 1926, son of Edmond F. and Elizabeth McGovern Ormsbee, he was a 1944 graduate of the former New Marlboro High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater in Okinawa and the Philippines and was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. Mr. Ormsbee was last employed by the New Marlboro Transfer Station, retiring in 2004. He had owned and operated Gibson's Grove on Lake Buel in the 1950s and the Pyrofax Gas Co. from 1956 to1960, and then was a driver for Sheffield Plastics for 25 years. He was a New Marlboro selectman from 1953 to 1960. He was an avid history buff, enjoyed driving his Model A Ford and attending car shows. He also enjoyed animals. He leaves a son, Edmond Ormsbee of Mill River; a daughter, Jamie Ormsbee-Oates of Sheffield; a brother, John B. Ormsbee of Mill River, and four grandchildren. He also leaves his former wife, Britt-Marie Magnuson Ormsbee of Sheffield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for James B. Ormsbee, who died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, will be Saturday, March 12, at 1:30 at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Joseph Bishop officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Lee Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 to 1:30. Expressions of sympathy in James' memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, c/o the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He leaves his grandchildren, Brandon and Charles Ormsbee, and Lydia and Eliza Oates.
