Florence Haigh

Florence Mary Haigh, 93, formerly of 1398 Massachusetts Ave., died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where she was admitted a week ago. She had resided at Willowood nursing home in Williamstown for 3 1/2 years. Born in Rhode Island on Dec. 25, 1907, daughter of Walter and Emily Wood Haigh, she came to North Adams as a child with her family and attended local schools. She was a 1925 graduate of Drury High School and a 1931 graduate of the former North Adams Normal School. In 1943, she received a bachelor of science in education degree from the former North Adams State Teachers College. She was first employed as a substitute teacher in a prekindergarten program in North Adams, and starting in 1934 taught Grades 1 to 6 in Clarksburg for five years. From 1939 until 1953, she was employed with the former Archer Elementary School, now Brayton Elementary School. She also taught at Greylock Elementary School and was named assistant principal in 1955. She retired from there in 1973. A member of St. Andrew's Chapel in North Adams, she was also a member of its choir. She enjoyed gardening, musical activities and traveling throughout the United States and England and on many of the continents of the world. She leaves a nephew and three nieces. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 in St. Andrew's Chapel. The Rev. David R. Carter, rector, will officiate. Burial will follow in Blackinton Cemetery. Calling hours at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, North Adams, will be Thursday from 6 to 8. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to St. Andrew's Chapel through the funeral home, 46 N. Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
