Wallace Smith Griswold

Wallace Smith Griswold, 94, of 29 Burt St. died early yesterday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital following a short illness. Born in New Lebanon, N.Y., on Aug. 21, 1910, son of George and Hattie Van Hamlin Griswold, he came to Adams as a child and attended schools there. Mr. Griswold was employed by the Pfizer Inc. plant, now known as Specialty Minerals, retiring in 1975. Earlier, he was a truck driver for the former H. W. Clark Biscuit Co. in North Adams and, as a youth, had worked for several area farms. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Cheshire and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horses. His wife, the former Evelyn E. Best, whom he married in 1935, died June 18, 1996. He leaves two daughters, Mabel Sherman of Adams and Mary Lou Kleiner of Tilton, N.H.; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Wallace Smith Griswold, who died March 29, 2005, will be Friday, April 1, at noon at AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 11 until the service. Memorial donations may be made to United Methodist Church of Cheshire or to a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home. He leaves his sons-in-law, Ferdinand Sherman and Kenneth Kleiner, five grandchildren, Deborah Dyndor of Clearwater Beach, Fla.; Diane Saldo of Stamford, Vt.; Tammy Gluck of Newton, N.H.; Kenneth Kleiner Jr. of Hudson, N.H., and Daniel Kleiner of Manchester, N.H., and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter Griswold and George Griswold Jr.
