Claire Massaconi

Claire Massaconi, 55, of 38 Victoria Lane died yesterday morning at Baystate Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Chicopee on Jan. 28, 1950, daughter of Loretta Ablicki Asselin and the late Robert Asselin, she was a 1968 graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield. She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, in 1972. She also earned a master's degree in reading from American International College. A teacher, Mrs. Massaconi had been employed by the Pittsfield Public School system for 28 years, retiring in 2001 because of ill health. She first taught in Follow Through in 1972 and then taught at Conte Community School, formerly West Side Community. Following her retirement, she worked part-time at the Community Corrections Center, and taught computers at St. Mark Middle School, Sacred Heart Elementary School and Morningside Community School. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, where she organized and ran the food pantry and the church store. She was also an active participant in the Relay for Life, the Lanesboro Scholarship and after-school tutoring. She and her husband, Mark Massaconi, celebrated their 28th anniversary on Feb. 19. Besides her mother, of Chicopee, and her husband, she leaves triplet sons, Marcus Massaconi, a student at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Joshua Massaconi, a student at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., and Trevor Massaconi, a student at Seton Hall College in South Orange, N.J., and a sister, Ruth DeStrump of Chicopee. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Claire Asselin Massaconi, age 55, was called safely home on March 31, 2005. The funeral will be Saturday at 9 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Entombment will take place at a later date in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In keeping with Claire's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Baystate Regional Cancer Center or the American Cancer Society in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Angelina C. Massaconi; her brothers-in-law, Michael V. and Mitchell D. Massaconi and Butch DeStrump, several nieces and nephews and her godchildren.
