Joseph A. Bernier

Joseph Armand Bernier, 82, of 54 Alger St. died Monday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in St. Eugene, Canada, on Aug. 4, 1918, son of Joseph Ernest and Blanche Tanguay Bernier, he attended schools there and moved to Adams at the age of 14. Mr. Bernier was first employed by the former A.B. Katz Co. and later worked as a machinist for 31 years at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield, retiring in 1981. He then worked as a machinist at H.R. Machine Co. for the past 20 years until becoming ill two weeks ago. He was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame and St. Thomas Aquinas and a member of the Berkshire County Line Dancers and the Singles Connection. He also tutored students in machine technology. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, working and spending time with family. His wife, the former Margery A. Kenney, whom he married Feb. 19, 1944, died Feb. 26, 1995. He leaves six sons, Kenneth Bernier of Columbus, Ohio, Thomas Bernier of Stephentown, N.Y., Ronald Bernier and Paul Bernier, both of Cheshire, Robert Bernier of North Adams, and Anthony Bernier of Adams; 20 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Bernier Powers, who died June 23, 1994. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 11:15 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Adams, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parish of Notre Dame and St. Thomas. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Joseph A. Bernier Scholarship Fund at C.H. McCann Technical High School, North Adams, through the funeral home. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Bernier Powers; two brothers, J. Ralph Bernier and J. Edward Bernier, and a sister, Jacqueline Munoz.
