Francis LaPointe

Francis John "Frenchy" LaPointe, 40, of 1156 Russell Drive, Mount Pleasant, S.C., a native of North Adams, died Monday at home. Born in North Adams on April 7, 1961, son of Marguerite Theresa Jodoin LaPointe and the late Henri R. LaPointe, he graduated from Charles H. McCann Regional Vocational Technical School in 1980. He moved to South Carolina six years ago. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served for four years in Norway, Okinawa and several other locations. He was discharged as a lance corporal. He also served in the Massachusetts National Guard in Adams for several years. Mr. LaPointe was employed as a welding foreman for a construction company in South Carolina. While in North Adams, he was a communicant of Notre Dame Church and a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 487. In 1988, he received the Bronze Star for bravery from the Massachusetts Humane Society for his successful rescue of two girls who overturned in a canoe on Windsor Lake in April of that year. Besides his mother, of North Adams, he leaves a daughter, Marie LaPointe of Adams; four brothers, Michael LaPointe of Greenfield, Henri LaPointe of North Adams, Raymond LaPointe of Mount Pleasant and Ronald LaPointe of Jamestown, S.C.; and four sisters, Marianne Leveille of Jamestown, Marthe LaPointe of North Adams, Lilliane Neil of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Denise Furey of Clifton Park, N.Y. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 at Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Marie LaPointe Trust Fund through AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
