S. Grace Williams

S. Grace Williams, 89, of 108 Holmes Road died Saturday evening at Hillcrest Commons, where she was admitted Thursday. She had been a resident of Melbourne Place assisted-living facility in Pittsfield for two years. Born in Pittsfield on April 4, 1912, daughter of Patrick H. and C. Louise Nelligan O'Donnell, she was a 1930 graduate of Pittsfield High School. The graduation took place in the former Colonial Theatre. Mrs. Williams was employed by the former Berkshire County Savings Bank, now Berkshire Bank, as a teller. She was named a vice president in 1974 and retired in 1977 with 37 years of service. Before that, she worked at GE. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and an active member of its Rosary Sodality. She was a volunteer at Hancock Shaker Village, swam daily, and enjoyed reading, gardening and collecting antiques. She and her husband, Alden Hart Williams, traveled throughout the world. Her husband, whom she married April 8, 1940, in St. Joseph's Church, died Feb. 18, 1977. She leaves a brother, Roger E. O'Donnell of Charleston, S.C.; and three sisters, C. Louise Walker, Alice F. Sykes and Marjorie E. Hickey, all of Pittsfield. An infant son, Richard Williams, died in 1948. Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. Funeral services will be held at a time to be announced. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to St. Ann's Church, both in care of the funeral home. She was predeceased by three brothers, James H. O'Donnell, William P. O'Donnell and John J. O'Donnell, and three sisters, Rose Shepardson, Claire A. Byrnes and Mary T. Hebert.
