George "Carl" Sumner

George "Carl" Sumner, 77, of 108 Dean St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in North Adams on Oct. 21, 1927, son of George and Elizabeth Cradelton Sumner, he attended schools in North Adams. He was a Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Mr. Sumner worked for the General Electric Co. as an assembler on the Bradley Transmissions for 22 years, retiring in 1987. Prior to his employment at GE, he worked operating heavy equipment. He was a communicant of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church. He liked to hunt and fish, and enjoyed woodworking and making wood crafts. He and his wife, the former Elsie Bona were married on July 2, 1949. Besides his wife of Cheshire, he leaves a daughter, Cindy Gajda of Cheshire; a son, Gary P. Sumner of Prescott, Ariz.; a sister, Phyllis McClane of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, William Sumner of Canterbury, Conn. and George Sweet of Cheshire, and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for George "Carl" Sumner will be held Tuesday, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Cheshire will be on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or St. Mary's Church in care of the funeral home, 121 North State. Mr. Sumner will be lovingly missed by his son-in-law, Gary Gajda and four grandchildren, Cara and Kristin Gajda and Gary P. Jr. and Ashley Sumner, and best friend, Joe.
