John L. Santos

John L. Santos, 85, of Stockbridge Road died Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Fairview Hospital. Born in New London, Conn., on June 7, 1920, son of Leo and Leah Santos, he was educated in New London schools. He moved to Great Barrington in 1945. A veteran of the Army Air Corps, he served during World War II as a bombardier. Mr. Santos made harnesses for the Budweiser Clydesdale horses for over 20 years. He retired in 1996. Prior to that, he was a building contractor. He built the Briarcliff Motel in 1961, which he owned and managed with his wife until 1976. He and his wife, the former Jane Currie, were married in 1942. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James Santos of Great Barrington; a daughter, Jayne Tonry of Canton, and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private graveside service for John L. Santos, who died Nov. 16, 2005, will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in his memory to Berkshire Community Action, Council South, Toy Fund in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He also leaves three grandchildren, Amanda Santos, and Kelsey and Luke Tonry.
