Catherine Simpkins Great Barrington

Catherine Simpkins, 74, formerly of Great Barrington, died Friday at her home in Sebastian, Fla. She was the mother of Andrew Moro of Housatonic. Born in Alford on Dec. 13, 1926, daughter of Andreas and Martha Bona Moro, she graduated from the former Searles High School in 1944. She was employed by Mele Manufacturing in Utica, N.Y., in the late 1950s. In the mid-1980s, she retired and moved to Florida, where she worked part time at Oyster Point Bay, a resort in Sebastian. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Her husband, Edward Simpkins, whom she married March 26, 1964, in Montreal, died March 7, 1977. Besides her son, she leaves two brothers, John Moro and Pio Moro, both of Great Barrington; a sister, Ann Pipa of Kissimmee, Fla., and two granddaughters. She was predeceased by her companion of 23 years, Walt Gacek, who died May 24, 2001. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be conducted Friday, June 15, at 10 at Corpus Christi Church, Housatonic, with the Rev. Anthony J. Jutt, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 14, from 5 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Contributions in Catherine's memory may be made to the Great Barrington Fire Department Training Facility in care of the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
