Mary R. Dowling

Mary Ruth Dowling, 74, of 7 Norwich Drive died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Beechwood, Ind., on July 18, 1926, daughter of Jesse and Mary Smitley, she graduated from high school in Indiana. Mrs. Dowling was employed in Naval ordnance systems, serving as Secretary to the Army-Navy Commander in Boston, and later at GE Naval Ordnance Systems. She retired in 1991 after 35 years of service. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Dalton and enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading. Her husband, William F. Dowling Jr., whom she married in 1947, died Jan. 6, 1985. She leaves two sons, Michael S. Dowling and Patrick D. Dowling, both of Dalton; a brother, Peter Smitley of Indiana, and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Dalton, with the Rev. Robert R. Kyte and the Rev. Irene Jones officiating. Burial will be in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the family home, 7 Norwich Drive, Dalton, today and tomorrow, from noon to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, contributions may be made to Berkshire Medical Center or to the American Heart Association or American Cancer Society, in care of the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, which is in charge of arrangements.
