James A. Viele

James A. Viele, 91, formerly of 25 Putnam Ave., died Sunday at North Adams Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he was admitted May 7. Born in Lexington, Ky., on Jan. 6, 1910, adopted son of Joe and Cordelia Veal, he attended schools there. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and received several campaign medals. He retired April 13, 1953, as chief gunner mate after 23 years of service. After his retirement, Mr. Viele was employed by GE, the former Model Dairy, Coca-Cola Co. and, most recently, as a custodian in the Pittsfield School Department. He was a member of St. Stephen's Church and the Fleet Reserve Association in Washington, D.C. His wife, the former, Mildred H. Armstrong, whom he married Feb. 6, 1940, died July 31, 1988. He leaves two sons, Verne R. Viele of Springfield and Allan A. Viele of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Janice M. Viele of Adams; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted tomorrow, June 20, at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. David J. DeSmith, interim rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the family plot at Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 10 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital Memorial and Honor Program in care of the funeral home.
