Charles H. Abriel Sr., 69, of 9 Sunset St. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 1, 1931, son of Stephen C. Abriel Jr. and Ruth Newberry Abriel, he graduated from Pittsfield High School. Mr. Abriel served in the Navy aboard the USS Bennington aircraft carrier. He received the Navy Occupation Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was employed as a mechanic for the city of Pittsfield's Department of Public Works for 35 years, retiring in 1990. Mr. Abriel enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He leaves his wife, the former Eileen Jones, whom he married Nov. 17, 1951; a son, Charles H. Abriel Jr. of Pittsfield; two daughters, Laurene D. Kruger and Tina M. DeFreest, both of Pittsfield; a brother, John S. Abriel of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Charles "Bud" Abriel Sr., 69, who died Dec. 25, 2000, will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Davis, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home, Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Berkshire VNA or the American Cancer Society, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield 01201.
