Frederick Holzman

Frederick Christian Holzman, 89, of Round Hill Road died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Good Ground, N.Y., on March 31, 1912, son of Christian Frederick and Edith Hubbard Holzman, he attended schools there. Mr. Holzman operated the family duck farm in the Hamptons until October 1941, when he and his wife, the former Lorraine Bumstead, moved to Great Barrington. He was a master carpenter, working all over the southern Berkshires until his retirement in 1985. He previously was a master mechanic at the former Great Barrington Manufacturing Co. He and his wife enjoyed traveling around the country in their Airstream trailer. They were 40-year members of the Wally Byan Caravan Club. He was the club's Massachusetts director and, this past year they acquired their eighth star. Mr. Holzman also enjoyed gardening around his home, mowing the lawn, fishing and woodworking. He carved wooden ducks and made cabinets and outdoor furniture. He and his wife were also square dancers and had entered in many competitions. He leaves his wife, Lorraine, whom he married Jan. 16, 1937, in Howard Beach, N.Y. The family will receive friends Friday, June 22, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, Great Barrington. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Mr. Holzman's memory may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad through the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
