Thomas R. "Ricky" Mathews, 37, of 1156 West State Line Road, Rossville, Ga., formerly of Dalton, died yesterday at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., after a short illness. Born in Pittsfield on March 2, 1964, son of Thomas J. Mathews of Dalton and Darlene Chilson Mathews Slater of Dothan, Ala., he attended Pittsfield and Cummington schools. He was a 1981 graduate of Wahconah Regional High Schoo. He had resided in Dalton before moving to Georgia 10 years ago. Mr. Mathews was employed as a drywall contractor for Lee Mark Drywall in Chattanooga before becoming ill six months ago. He also was a self-employed drywall contractor. He enjoyed airplanes, sports, skiing, snowmobiling and boating. Besides his parents, he leaves his wife, the former Janice Buffington, whom he married Oct. 24, 1997, in Chattanooga; a brother, Kevin M. Mathews of Pittsfield, and a sister, Mary A. Mathews of Dalton. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Agnes' Church in Dalton celebrated by the Rev. John A. Koonz, pastor. Burial will follow. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dalton Youth Center in care of the funeral home, 890 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
