Walter Luczynski

Walter Thomas Luczynski, 77, of 3105 Collier Drive, Greensboro, N.C., formerly of North Adams, died Thursday at the Blumenthal Jewish Home for the Aged in Greensboro. Born in North Adams on June 23, 1923, son of Thomas and Antonia Barlik Luczynski, he attended North Adams schools. He graduated from Drury High School and attended the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He received his bachelor's degree in history from New York University in 1949. He earned a master's degree in history from the University of Michigan and later attended the University of Illinois, where he was awarded his doctorate in history. Mr. Luczynski joined the Army in June 1943, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He was a professor in the history department at the University of Illinois until 1960. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he taught American and European history for many years until his retirement. While in North Adams, Mr. Luczynski was a communicant of St. Francis' Church. He leaves a brother, Thomas A. Luczynski of Madison, Ohio, and two sisters, Bernice Isenhart of Pittsfield and Edna Michalski of Easthampton. Funeral Services will be Monday morning at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Public Library through the funeral home. He was predeceased by a sister and a brother, Genevieve V. Gorczakoski, who died May 1, 1991, and Edward W. Luczynski, who died Aug. 3, 1981.
