Edward J. Spiewak

Edward J. Spiewak, 89, of 22 Essex St. died Monday evening at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 23, 1911, son of Joseph and Katherine Koneve Spiewak, he graduated from Pittsfield High School. He served in the Army from October 1942 to December 1945 with the 145th Army Air Forces Airways Communications System Squadron as a staff sergeant. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, APT Campaign Ribbon and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon. Mr. Spiewak was employed as a paper component mixer for the former Hurlbut Paper Co. in South Lee for 30 years, retiring in October 1976. He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the Hurlbut Quarter Century Club. His wife, the former Helen L. Overlock, whom he married July 5, 1952, died Oct. 16, 1990. He leaves two sisters, Marion Folkerth of Columbus, Ohio, and Helen Spiewak of Taveras, Fla., and a brother, Anthony Spiewak of Leesburg, Fla. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12 p.m. at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. William Eckert officiating. Burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in New Lebanon Center, N.Y., with the Rev. John Close officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
