Frank J. Zak

Frank J. Zak, 89, of 29 Union St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Sunderland on Jan. 8, 1912, son of John and Mary Swaluk Zak, he attended schools there and graduated from Amherst High School. He took courses at the University of Massachusetts and graduated from New York University. He served in the Navy during World War II as a radar operator in the Pacific. Mr. Zak moved to New York and, in 1954, started a welding supply business, F&G Welding, now known as Air Weld Inc., in Maspeth. It expanded to 12 locations and his nephew, John Zak, took over the business when he retired in 1980 and moved to Plainfield. He was a member of the Rod and Gun Club of Plainfield. His wife, the former Vera Gessler, died in 1987. His closest survivors are several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday morning at 11 at DROZDAL FUNERAL HOME, 120 Damon Road, Northampton, with burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, South Deerfield. Calling hours will be Saturday from 10 until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 369 South St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
