Josephine Mauro

Josephine Mauro, 85, formerly of Churchill Crest, died Tuesday at Hillcrest Commons. Born in Dalton on Aug. 30, 1915, daughter of Caesar and Giovina Palma Contenta, she graduated from the former Dalton High School. She and her husband, Joseph, owned and operated Dalton Appliance Center in Dalton and Pittsfield. She later was a buyer in the candy department at the former England's Department Store for many years. She retired when the store closed in 1988. A golfer, Mrs. Mauro was a former member of the Wahconah Country Club. She resided in Tarpon Springs, Fla., for a time. Her husband, whom she married July 29, 1939, died Dec. 31, 1997. She leaves a son, Peter Mauro of Schaumburg, Ill.; a daughter, Palma Fleck of Richmond and Boston; a brother, Charles Contenta of Seattle; two sisters, Frances Fields and Mary Smith Bunton, both of Bradenton, Fla., and three grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Charles' Church, with the Rev. Lee Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Dalton. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to St. Jude Children's Hospital in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mrs. Mauro was predeceased by her brother, Peter Contenta, who died in 1972, and her sister, Ann Avalle, who died in 1991. Another sister, Louise Savery, died Monday, June 25.
