Doris W. Gray

Doris W. Gray, 97, of Russell Street died Monday at Fairview Commons Nursing Home. Born in Lowell on Nov. 9, 1903, daughter of Arthur and Addie L. Whittaker, she attended schools in Lowell and graduated from high school in Newburyport. She attended New Hampshire State Teachers College in Keene and graduated from the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston. She moved to Great Barrington in 1929. Mrs. Gray was employed as an art teacher in the Great Barrington School System for 36 years. During that time, she held summer painting classes for adults and children in her home. She also taught painting at the Claire Teague Senior Center. She was a member of the Congregational Church, with brief interludes in the Episcopal and Lutheran denominations. She sang in the choirs and took an active part in the women's organizations of all three. During the 1940s, she was an organist and choir director at Stockbridge Congregational Church. She was also a member of several regional art associations. She lived in Glendale, Ariz., from 1974-77, where she was a qualified Laubach tutor, working with Mexican-American field hands to help them improve their English. Her husband, William A. Gray, whom she married in 1954, died in 1966. She leaves two stepsons, Gordon A. Gray of Great Barrington and William A. Gray of Kent, Wash.; seven step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Another stepson, Bruce A. Gray, died in 1992. A Service of Remembrance will be held at First Congregational Church, Great Barrington, at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 on Thursday, July 5, at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Those who desire may make memorial donations in Doris W. Gray's name to the Southern Berkshire Elderly Transportation Co. in care of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
