Gracia M. Brown

Gracia M. Brown, 82, of The Woodner, 3636 16th Street NW., Washington, D.C., a native of Pittsfield, died Monday at the home of a nephew in South Hadley. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 24, 1918, daughter of Edward and Annie Hall Brown, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1936. She also graduated from Hunter College, New York, in 1955. She had resided in Washington since 1968. She was employed in the payroll department of GE in Pittsfield until moving to New York City. Prior to residing in Washington, she taught school in Michigan and New Hartford, N.Y. Ms. Brown was a member of The Church of the Ascension and St. Agnes in Washington, and of the Daughters of the King of St. Luke's Church, also in Washington. She was a volunteer in the White House greetings office for 22 years under five presidents. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary. She was on the Central Union Mission executive board. She traveled extensively in the United States and visited the United Kingdom and Pakistan. She leaves a brother, the Rev. Ralph E. Brown of Royalston; and a sister, Ruth Brown Johnson of Russell, Pa. A graveside service will be held Friday, July 13, at 1 in the Pittsfield Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 3 in the Morningside Baptist Church. There are no calling hours. The RYDER FUNERAL HOME of South Hadley is in charge of arrangements.
