Raymond Callahan

Raymond F. Callahan Sr., 84, formerly of 93 Edward Ave., died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. He had been a resident at Providence Care Center in Lenox for a year. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 28, 1917, son of Patrick and Jane Kidney Callahan, he was a 1935 graduate of St. Joseph's High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he was the first of seven draftees from Pittsfield in 1940. He served in Africa, Italy, France and Germany with the 68th Antiaircraft Battalion. He was the owner and operator of the former Piccadilly restaurant for 33 years, retiring in 1976. Mr. Callahan was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 68, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448, Council 103 of the Knights of Columbus and the Exchange Club. An avid golfer, he was also a member of the Skyline Country Club. His wife, the former Isabelle S. Skowron, whom he married Sept. 5, 1942, died Oct. 13, 1975. He leaves a son, Raymond F. Callahan Jr. of Pittsfield, and a daughter, Mary Jane D. Panos of Pittsfield. The funeral will be tomorrow, July 7, at 8:15 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 in Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are today, July 6, from 4 to 7. Mr. Callahan was predeceased by seven sisters, Irene Blais, Elizabeth Doyle, Mary Discoe, Ann O'Connell, Margaret Mara, Janette Tucker and Ellen Koscher, and two brothers, Lawrence Callahan and John Callahan. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church or to Providence Care Center in Lenox, in care of the funeral home.
