Thomas Tierney

Thomas F. Tierney, 63, of 3906 47th St., Sunnyside, N.Y., a Pittsfield native, died Monday at Mount Sinai Hospital in Astoria, N.Y. Born in Pittsfield on May 25, 1938, son of the late Orville E. and Helen Preston Tierney, he attended local schools, including Pittsfield High School. He was an Army veteran, stationed in Hawaii prior to its statehood. Mr. Tierney was first employed as an airplane mechanic at Pratt & Whitney in Hartford and returned to Pittsfield to work with Renzi Brothers Painting Co. In 1977, he moved to New York City and was employed with the District Council No. 9, Local 490, of the paper hangers and painters union, specializing in fine finishing work and gold leafing. He retired in February due to ill health. A deep sea fishing enthusiast, he also enjoyed returning to the Berkshires to fish the streams, and hunt deer and bear. He leaves a daughter, Kathy A. Tierney of Pittsfield; a son, James F. Tierney of Sunnyside, N.Y.; two sisters, Martha Monti of Pittsfield and Barbara Mahaney of Dalton; a brother, William Tierney of Pittsfield; six grandchildren; his longtime companion, Cassie Kerr, and his former wife, Dorothy Higgins Tierney. He was predeceased by two sons, Wayne A. Tierney, who died Sept. 12, 1988, and Thomas P. Tierney, who died March 4, 1993, and a daughter, Sharon L. Tierney, who died Jan. 3, 2000. Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Thursday from 4 to 7. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. William Furey officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the VFW Post No. 448 Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
