William A. Palmer

William Alonzo Palmer, 62, of Hamlin Street died Wednesday at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born in Great Barrington on March 6, 1939, son of Alonzo W. and Doris VanDeusen Palmer, he attended schools there, including the former Searles High School. Mr. Palmer had worked for the Lone Oak Campground as a security guard since 1996. In the early 1960s, he worked for the Great Barrington Cemetery Department and, for 25 years, was a groundskeeper for the former Great Barrington Fair. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and was a fan of the Dodgers. He also enjoyed fishing in local lakes and streams. He leaves two sons, Thomas Palmer and Wayne Palmer, both of Lee; four daughters, Susan Faas and Robin Palmer, both of Pittsfield, Doris Stanton of Lee, and Connie Bleau of Great Barrington; five brothers, John Palmer and James Palmer, both of Great Barrington, and Frank Palmer, George Palmer and Joseph Palmer, all of Winsted, Conn.; four sisters, Barbara McArthur of Torrington, Conn., Dawn Mattie of New Marlboro, Linda Palmer of Sharon, Conn., and Emma Palmer of Winsted ; 13 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Another sister, Ruth Corna, died in 1980. A service of remembrance will be held Monday, July 16, at 2 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Arthur Kaufman, pastor of Old Parish Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association in care of the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
