Mathilde Wirth

Mathilde Wirth, 97, of West Street died Friday evening at Fairview Commons Nursing Facility in Great Barrington, where she had been a resident since 1997. Born in Strasskirchen, Germany, on April 13, 1904, daughter of Joseph and Barbara Obergrisser, she attended schools there. She and her husband, Joseph Wirth, emigrated to the United States in 1926, settling in Philadelphia before moving to New York. She moved to Sandisfield in 1956. She was employed by various inns in Berkshire County, retiring in the early 1960s. Mr. Wirth is deceased. Mrs. Wirth was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, nature and animals, especially German shepherds. She leaves a son, Joseph Wirth of Sandisfield; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 17, at 11 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield by the Rev. Frederick Heberle. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery in Great Barrington. There will be no calling hours. Those who wish may make contributions in Mrs. Wirth's name to HospiceCare in the Berkshires through FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
