Patricia Sterling

Patricia P. Sterling, 78, of Concord, formerly of Pittsfield, died July 8 at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 16, 1923, daughter of Thomas F. and Caroline Chaffee Plunkett, she attended local schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School. She also attended Wellesley College and received her master's degree in education from Tufts University in 1967. She had resided in Concord since 1952. During World War II, she served as an ensign in the Navy Waves. Mrs. Sterling was a math teacher in the Concord middle schools until her retirement in 1985. She helped organize the City Year program, in which middle school students from Concord and Charlestown explored Boston and Concord together and based their studies at school on what they learned in the field. She was active in town politics, serving on the Concord Housing Authority for many years. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and a founding member of Grassroots Actions for Peace. She leaves her husband, James Sterling, whom she married in 1947; three daughters, Ann B. Sterling of Acton, Mary C. Sterling of Concord and Elizabeth B. Sterling of Marlboro; a son, James Sterling of Concord; a sister, Margaret Smith of Houston; two brothers, Thomas F. Plunkett of Pittsfield and William R. Plunkett of Seattle, and four grandchildren
