JOSEPH D. PROCOPIO

Joseph D. Procopio, 86, of 193 Elberon Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 19, 1914, son of Dominic and Marie Corelli Procopio, he attended local schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he received a number of medals and campaign ribbons for his service, including the victory medal. Mr. Procopio was an owner and operator with his brothers of Procopio Brothers Garage for 30 years. He also was employed by Eaton Paper Co., retiring in 1980. Prior to World War II, he had been a truck driver. A member of American Legion Post 68 for more than 40 years, he enjoyed traveling and gardening. He leaves his wife, the former Bernice Funk Neilson, whom he married Oct. 31, 1948; a son, Eric Procopio of St. Cloud, Fla.; two daughters, Carol Phelps of Windsor and Sheila Mercuri of Pittsfield; a stepson, Richard Neilson of Nashua, N.H.; two brothers, Frank Procopio and Anthony Procopio, both of Pittsfield; four sisters, Jane Fowler of Trombell, Texas, Mary Smith of Salem, and Jan Clark and Yolanda Potter, both of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Joseph D. Procopio, 86, who died Dec. 28, 2000, will be held Saturday at 8:45 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Pittsfield, celebrated by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home in Pittsfield will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 29. Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Procopio's memory to the charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
