George Clermont

George Joseph Clermont, 78, of 446 State Road died yesterday at Sweet Brook Care Center in Williamstown. Born in North Adams on March 26, 1923, son of Henri J. and Bertha Secor Clermont, he attended the former Holy Family School and was a 1941 Pro Merito graduate of Drury High School. He attended Georgia Tech University in Athens. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater. Mr. Clermont was employed by B. Lampron & Son Co. as a contractor, retiring in 1992 when the company closed. Prior to that, he was employed by H. Greenberg & Son Hardware and, for 10 years, had owned and operated a contracting business, Taconic Modernizing. He also had operated a concession in the former Berkshire Hathaway Mill for a few years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church, where he served as a lector and member of the Parish Council. He also was a member of the Holy Family Terrace Building Committee and Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion. He and his wife, the former Gloria Decoteau, were married May 3, 1947, in Holy Family Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Suzanne M. Mendel of Adams; a son, William A. Clermont of Franklin; a sister, Florence Kittler of South Weymouth, and two grandsons. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Funeral Mass at 11 at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Burial in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 8. Two brothers and a sister are deceased, including the Rev. William Clermont, AA, and Edward Clermont and Irene Montagna.
