Bertha E. Wilcox

Bertha E. Wilcox, 72, of 140 Silver St. died Sunday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox. Born in Brattleboro, Vt., on Sept. 30, 1928, daughter of Walter and Cecelia Johnson Fairbanks, she graduated from Brattleboro High School and from Brown University. She moved to Lee in the early 1950s. Mrs. Wilcox was employed by radio station WSBS as a news correspondent in the Lee area during the 1960s and '70s. She also worked in the tent at Tanglewood, was a former town census taker and worked at the voting polls. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church and a former member of Greenock Country Club, where she played in the Thursday Night Ladies' League. She was the women's club champion in 1983. Her husband, Phillip B. Wilcox, whom she married April 13, 1949, died June 18, 1967. She leaves her companion of many years, Earl Maby, with whom she resided; four sons, Douglas B. Wilcox, Alan B. Wilcox and Glenn M. Wilcox, all of Lee, and Scott D. Wilcox of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Susan L. Martinez of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Elizabeth "Betsy" Kelly of Lee; a brother, Robert Fairbanks of Brattleboro, Vt.; 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. George's Episcopal Church in Lee by the Rev. John J. Tarrant, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockbridge. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visiting hours at KELLY FUNERAL HOME will be today from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to the Lee Library or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
