Thomas Fitzgerald

Thomas Cornelius Fitzgerald, 87, of 207 Francis Ave. died Sunday at home.Born in New York City on Aug. 18, 1914, son of William and Mary McHugh Fitzgerald, he attended New York and New Jersey schools. He moved to Pittsfield in 1945.

A World War II Army veteran, he served as a private first-class with the 9th General Hospital Unit from May 9, 1942, until being honorably discharged on Dec. 10, 1945.Mr. Fitzgerald was employed by GE for 33 years, retiring as a core winder from the large transformer department in 1979. He also had been employed by the Independent Rapid Transit Authority in New York City from 1937 until 1942.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, where he was an usher for many years and was active in church affairs, including serving on the parish council. He was a member of the Polish Community Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 446, and the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs. He enjoyed walking and was a fan of the New York Yankees.

He leaves his wife, the former Doris M. Hook, whom he married May 17, 1943; four sons, William T. Fitzgerald of Korea, Thomas C. Fitzgerald II of Spokane, Wash., and Joseph M. Fitzgerald and James J. Fitzgerald, both of Pittsfield; a daughter, Mary E. Fitzgerald of Mansfield; a brother, Joseph M. Fitzgerald of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Teresa M. Fitzgerald, who died Dec. 12, 1991.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 in St. Joseph's Church by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours at the funeral home will be today, Tuesday, from 4:30 until 7:30. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare of the Berkshires or to St. Joseph's Church, both in care of the funeral home.
