Anthony D. Scelsi

Anthony D. Scelsi, 74, of 10990 Green Trail Drive South, Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Pittsfield, died Saturday at Hospice and Home Care by the Sea in Boca Raton, Fla. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 15, 1926, son of Giuseppe and Josephine Alberti Scelsi, he graduated from Pittsfield High School. Mr. Scelsi served in the Army in World War II, and was stationed in Hawaii. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. As a young man, he assisted his father in the operation of the former J. Scelsi & Co., a wholesale and retail grocery store and bakery on John Street. He then became proprietor of C. Scelsi's Berkshire Bakery for 20 years, retiring in 1984. Mr. Scelsi moved to Lake Worth, Fla., in 1987, and to Boynton Beach in 1993. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Pittsfield and St. Mark's Church in Boynton Beach. He also was a member of art clubs in Florida and won several prizes for his artwork. He leaves his wife, the former Carmella C. Polcaro, whom he married April 6, 1953, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church; a son, Joseph M. Scelsi of Ashfield, and a grandson. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Predeceased by a brother, Michael J. Scelsi, and two sisters, Josephine M. Scelsi and Anna Campagna. Funeral services will take place Friday, Aug. 3, at 9 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, celebrated by the Rev. Pius C. Murray, CSS. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield, with full military honors. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME will be Thursday, Aug. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Home Care by the Sea in care of the funeral home.
