Edith Cohen

Edith Cohen, 75, of 33 Adam St. died Saturday evening at Springside of Pittsfield, where she had resided for a month. Born in Albany, N.Y., on Feb. 15, 1926, daughter of Benjamin and Sadie Weisberg Kaufman, she graduated from Schuyler High School. She moved to Pittsfield in 1949. During World War II, Mrs. Cohen was employed as a crane operator at the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, N.Y. She was a member of Congregation Knesset Israel and a longtime member of TOPS. Her husband, Israel "Manny" Cohen, whom she married Feb. 26, 1949, died Aug. 30, 1995. She leaves a son, Alan S. Cohen of Pittsfield; two daughters, Eleanor H. Cohen and Sheila E. Cohen, both of Pittsfield; two sisters, Ethel Kaufman DeGaetano of Albany and Ida Scher of Ventura, Calif., and her grandson, Stephan Cohen, whom she raised. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Sidney Cohen of Albany, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be tomorrow at 11 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with Rabbi David Small, spiritual leader of the congregation, officiating. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Knesset Israel Synagogue, 16 Colt Road; Elder Services, 66 Wendell Ave., or to the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires, 235 East St., all in Pittsfield.
