Howard H. Braun

Howard H. Braun, 83, of 57 Sampson Parkway died Monday at home. Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 13, 1917, son of Herman S. and Ida Marvin Braun, he attended local schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School. He received his baccalaureate degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served in the South Pacific with the staff of Rear Admiral R.K. Turner. After college, he returned to Pittsfield and joined his father in the operation of the former Braun's Package Store on North Street from 1946 until its sale in 1978. Mr. Braun was a member of Congregation Knesset Israel Synagogue and an associate member of Hadassah. He was a former chairman of the United Jewish Appeal in 1948, the year Israel was founded, and a charter member of the Holocaust Museum. He was a March of Dimes board member, a longtime member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club and a member of the Louis Green Post of the Jewish American War Veterans. He and his wife, the former Betty Davidson, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 12. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Myron T. Braun of Moab, Utah, and David E. Braun of Evanston, Ill; a brother, Jennings Braun of Boyington Beach, Fla., and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Knesset Israel Synagogue, with Rabbi David Small, spiritual leader of the congregation, officiating. Burial will follow in the Knesset Israel Cemetery. The DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either the Howard and Betty Braun Endowment Fund at Knesset Israel Synagogue or to the Bobby Braun Garden at Knesset Israel Synagogue, both at 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield, or to the Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, 472 West Mountain Road, Lenox.
