Jack J. Shrager

Jack J. Shrager, 77, of Philadelphia, a summer resident of Pittsfield, died Tuesday in Sarasota, Fla. Born in Philadelphia on July 24, 1924, son of Harry E. and Lillian Shrager, he attended Centre College in Danville, Ky., and the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in physics and mathematics. He received his doctorate in religious humanities. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a pilot and radar specialist, and received two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. He later served in the Air Force Reserves, and his last official duty was as the commanding officer of the CAP in Woodbury, N.J., with the rank of captain. Mr. Shrager was employed by the Federal Aviation Agency from 1961 to 1979 as a senior flight test engineer. Early in his career, he was internationally known in the field of scientific measurements and taught related graduate courses in measurement systems and experimental methods. In 1979, he started his own consulting firm, Shrager & Associates Inc., as a forensic engineer and accident reconstructionist. He enjoyed flying. His wife of 44 years, Gwen G. Shrager, died in 1995. He leaves three sons, Paul S. Shrager of Hollis, N.H., and Switzerland, Hugh H. Shrager of Lutz, Fla., and James J. Shrager of Fort Lee, N.J.; a sister, Selma Kestelman of Philadelphia; two brothers, Dr. Morton W. Shrager of Newtown Square, Pa., and David S. Shrager of Philadelphia and Longport, N.J.; two grandchildren, and his longtime companion and fiancee, Arline T. Levine of Sarasota and Pittsfield. A daughter, Dr. E. Eileen Shrager, died in 1990. Interment will be Friday, Aug. 17, at Roosevelt Cemetery, Trevose, Pa. Donations may be made to the Dr. E. Eileen Shrager Memorial Fund and sent to Mr. Henry Barsky, 1109 Woodbine Ave., Penn Valley, PA 19072. This nonprofit fund was established to encourage teen-agers to excel in science.
