Julius E. Fuchs

Julius E. "Bud" Fuchs, 82, of 996 Williams St. died Saturday in Montgomeryville, Pa., while vacationing with his family. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on May 17, 1919, son of Julius Paul and Isabelle Sullivan Fuchs, he was educated in Patchogue, N.Y., schools. He continued his education at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He enlisted in the Navy in 1940 and served on the USS Hopkins, which was stationed in the Pearl Harbor area during the attack of Dec. 7, 1941. He was also present in Tokyo Bay at the time of the Japanese surrender. He was commissioned an ensign in 1951, and was stationed in at the Newport, R.I., naval station in charge of the navigation and OOD School. He taught the "Rules of the Road" and emergency shiphandling at the Naval War College there. He retired as a lieutenant commander from the Newport Station in 1961 after 21 years of service. Known as a "Mustang," which is an enlisted man who had risen through the ranks, his naval service during World War II and the Korean Conflict was as a navigator. Following his military career, he became employed as a teacher and chairman of the social studies department at Lincoln R.I., High School, and a teacher at Rogers High School in Newport. He came to Pittsfield in 1970 and was employed at the former North Junior High, now Reid Middle School, and most recently taught at Pittsfield High School. He retired in 1990 after 20 years of service. Mr. Fuchs was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a former Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Parish Council and Troop 20 of the Boys Scouts. He leaves his wife of 35 years, the former Barbara A. Burgner, whom he married Aug. 13, 1966, in Sacred Heart Church; a son, Julius A. "Rusty" Fuchs of Hatfield; two daughters, Judith Simpson of Alhoa, Ore., and Lillian I. Fuchs of New Haven, Conn.; two brothers, Robert Fuchs of Bellport (Long Island), N.Y., and Everett Fuchs of Blue Point (Long Island), N.Y.; two sisters, Marian Cole of Dallas and Isabelle Dudek of Blue Point, and three grandchildren. Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Thursday from 5 to 7. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either Sacred Heart Church or to the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association, in care of the funeral home.
