Joseph Conner Sr.

Joseph E. Conner Sr., 69, of 31 Old Windsor Road died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield after a year's battle with cancer. Born in Becket on March 5, 1932, son of Fred and Rena Garneau Conner, he attended local schools. He lived in Becket most of his life before moving to Hinsdale in 1990. Mr. Conner was employed as a welder for 12 years at GE in the power transformer department, retiring in 1988 because of ill health. Prior to that, he was employed by Byron Weston in Dalton for 10 years and had been a welder for many years for several area firms. During the 2000-01 school year, he was a school crossing guard at the new Nessacus School in Dalton. An active member of the Hinsdale and Pittsfield Lions clubs, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He and his wife, the former Gloria M. Engwer, would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary Oct. 14. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Judith A. Reinhold of Dalton and Nancy L. Conner of Lee; three sons, Joseph E. Conner Jr. of West Springfield, and Timothy B. Conner and Scott R. Conner, both of Hinsdale; a sister, Carol Dupont of Becket; two brothers, Fred Conner of Becket and Charles Conner of Dalton; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 11 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton. Burial will follow in North Becket Cemetery in Becket. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
