Barbara Pickett

Barbara Pickett, 81, of 230 Hubbard Ave. and Northwest Harbor, Deer Island, New Brunswick, Canada, died Monday at home in Lenox. Born in Paris on May 9, 1920, daughter of Kenneth Proctor and Helen Averill Littauer, she was raised in Westport, Conn., and attended Abbott Academy and the Chamberlain School of Design in Boston. She also attended the University of Massachusetts and Berkshire Community College. She was the director of the nursery school at Austen Riggs in Stockbridge and was an early childhood teacher at Berkshire Country Day School for many years. As a young woman, she flew seaplanes and enjoyed sailing at Annisquam and Cape Ann. She was a longtime member of the Berkshire Garden Club and had a love of life and family. Her husband, Mansfield Elliott "Peter" Pickett, whom she married in 1942, died in 1996. She leaves three daughters, Gillian A. Panchy of Great Barrington, Andrea M. Brode of Walpole, N.H., and Tabitha Pickett-Vahle of Lenox, with whom she made her home; two sisters, Jane L. Parriott of Lenox and Averill L. Loh of Hyde Park, Vt.; six grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. A daughter, Khristin Littauer Pickett, died in 1990. Graveside services will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Lee Regional VNA, the Lenox Volunteer Ambulance Squad, or the Berkshire Botanical Garden Center, all in care of the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
