Stefan G. Racz, 60
BUCKLAND, Mass. - Stefan G. Racz, 60, a two-time candidate for state representative in the 2nd Berkshire District, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Feb. 25, 2011, at his State Street home.
Mr. Racz, chairman of the Buckland Selectmen and an Air Force veteran, ran as an independent, positioning himself as an alternative to the major parties. His campaign focused on the needs of small towns and aiding small business, and he hoped to promote local business through a 2nd Berkshire Business Alliance.
He first ran for representative in 2006 against Rep. Denis E. Guyer and again in 2010 in a crowded field to replace Guyer, losing to Paul Mark, a Hancock Democrat.
Born in Germany, he was raised in Charlemont and graduated in 1968 from Mohawk Trail Regional High School. He was a quality assurance auditor and trainer for Areva Nuclear Power Inc. and Yankee Atomic, retiring in 2004. He oversaw aspects of the decommissioning of Yankee's Rowe and Connecticut power plants.
Racz resided in Buckland for 36 years. He served on the Selectmen for nearly 10 years and was a regular volunteer at the Shelburne Senior Center, the Shelburne Falls Information Center and at several annual community events. He also served on the Franklin Regional Council of Governments representing Buckland and was chairman of the Shelburne Falls Area TRIAD.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Roxana, and a daughter, Rebecca.
FUNERAL NOTICE - A memorial service for Mr. Racz will be held Saturday, March 5, at 2 at Mary Lyon Church in Buckland.
