Joseph Welsh Jr.

Joseph Wickes Welsh Jr., 90, of New Marlboro and Vero Beach, Fla., died Tuesday at Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House in Vero Beach. Born in New York City on April 16, 1911, son of Joseph Wickes Welsh Sr. and Dorothy Kelly Welsh, he attended St. George's School in Newport, R.I., and graduated from Yale University in 1934. He was a former resident of New York City for many years. During World War II, Mr. Welsh was a member of Company K of the 7th Regiment, New York City, and later served in Europe with the airborne forces of the French First Army. He was a vice president of the Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago and for many years was a representative of the Banque Francaise du Commerce Exterieur of Paris in the United States. Most of his business career was spent in international banking. He retired in 1978. Mr. Welsh was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, a former member and governor of the Union Club of New York City, a former commodore of the Cedarhurst Yacht Club of Long Island, and a member of the Moorings Club of Vero Beach. He was a trustee of the United Church of New Marlboro and a director of the Visiting Nurse Association of Vero Beach. He leaves his wife of 26 years, the former Mary Ellen Restrepo; a stepson, Felipe Uribe of Medellin, Colombia, and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Vero Beach with the Rev. Michael Goldberg officiating. A later memorial service will take place at the New Marlboro Village Meeting House in the afternoon of Oct. 20, 2001, with the Rev. Joseph Bishop officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the VNA Hospice House, 1111 36th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960 in memory of Mr. Welsh. Arrangements are under the direction of STRUNK FUNERAL HOME, Vero Beach.
