Katherine A. Duby, 91
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Katherine A. "Kay" Duby, 91, of 63 Langlois Ave. died Friday, July 1, 2011, at home.
Born in North Adams on June 30, 1920, daughter of Thomas F. and Mary A. Brennan Walsh, she graduated as valedictorian from the former St. Joseph's High School there in 1938 and from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee in 1942 as a member of the Catholic college honor society Delta Epsilon Sigma.
Mrs. Duby was an educator for more than 30 years, first in West Stockbridge and then in the Adams school system, including at the former Adams High School from 1953 to 1959. Following time spent at home with her children, she returned to teaching in 1967, briefly at St. Joseph's and then for 15 years at Drury High School in North Adams, where she taught English. She retired in 1982.
She loved teaching and, in her later years, the regular contact she continued with former students was important to her.
She was an active parishioner at the former St. Francis' Parish in North Adams for many years and a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court Margaret 629. Most recently, she was a communicant of the Parish of Sts. Patrick and Raphael. Mrs. Duby was active in the reading buddy and exercise programs at the Harper Center and a member of the Friendship Club.
She and her husband, Henry Albert Duby, lived with their two daughters, Barbara and Jackie, in North Adams until her retirement. They moved to Williamstown in 1983, spending winters in New Port Richey, Fla. She became a full-time resident of Williamstown in 2007.
Her husband, whom she married on June 25, 1947, in North Adams, died in 1984. They were together for almost 47 years.
Besides her daughers, Barbara Morgan and her husband, Dwight, of Sandwich and Jacqueline Millar and her husband, David, of Plymouth, she leaves her grandchildren, Brad and Philip Millar, Gregory Morgan and his wife, Cherie, Kimberly Mebert and her husband, Mark, and Christopher Morgan; two great-grandchildren, and nephews and nieces including Dr. Thomas Walsh and his wife, Marcia, and Nancy Walsh and her husband, John Clancy.
She was predeceased by her brother, John Walsh and his wife, Mary, and by her niece Jane Walsh.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mrs. Duby will take place Saturday, July 9, at 11 at St. Patrick's Church, Southworth Street, Williamstown. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams.
Calling hours will be Friday, July 8, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are welcome to the Katherine A.
