Victor F. Modena Sr., 89

ADAMS, Mass. - Victor Ferdinand Modena Sr., 89, of 126 Howland Ave. died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at his home. Born in North Adams on Dec. 10, 1921, son of Carlo and Carolina Brondoni Modena, he attended North Adams schools and later received his high school diploma in 1957. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Air Corps as an aviation machinist's mate 3rd class, from Oct. 8, 1942, to Oct. 13, 1945. Mr. Modena was employed at the former Arnold Print Works for about 10 years until his retirement in 1983. He earlier worked at the former Wall-Streeter Shoe Co. and, from 1949 to 1967, at the former Sprague Electric Co. as a quality control foreman, both in North Adams. He then worked in construction. He was a communicant of the former St. Anthony of Padua Church, a member of Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and a former member of the Sons of Italy, all in North Adams. He enjoyed fishing. His wife, the former Jennie Benoit, whom he married on Dec. 10, 1949, died on July 18, 1981. He leaves two sons, Victor F. Modena Jr. and his wife, Amber, of North Adams and Robert C. Modena and his wife, Shanda, of Adams; two daughters, Sandra Langnickel of Adams and Betty Ann Tatro and her husband, Donald, of Stamford, Vt.; a sister, Emily Sheldon of North Adams; 16 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. His son William Goodreau and his siblings Theresa Donega, Mary Gamache, Helen DelNegro and Severino Modena predeceased him. FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Mr. Modena will be Friday, Sept. 9, at 10:15 a.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams. Calling hours will Thursday, Sept. 8, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Elder Services of Berkshire County in care of the funeral home.
