James J. Dougherty, 84
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — James J. Dougherty, 84, of 20 Highland View Drive, Bayville, N.Y., formerly of North Adams, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, in Bayville.
Born in North Adams on Sept. 5, 1927, son of James and Pearl Dougherty, he graduated with the Drury High School class of 1945 and from the former North Adams State Teachers College. He enjoyed attending alumni functions in North Adams.
Mr. Dougherty was devoted to teaching, and was a teacher at Bayville Elementary School for 34 years.
A veteran of World War II, he was a proud 50-year member of American Legion Post 1285 on Long Island, N.Y. He remained a devoted Red Sox fan.
He leaves his beloved wife of 59 years, the former Bette Phelps; two sons, Jeffrey Dougherty and Timothy Dougherty; two daughters, Beth Ann Dougherty and Sharon Dougherty Ward; a brother, Alfred "Budd" Dougherty of North Adams; five grandchildren, Timothy Dougherty, Patrick Dougherty, Kellen Dougherty, Kaity Ward and Holly Ward, and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
His daughter Kathleen "Kadi" Dougherty died in 1973.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services were held in Bayville and interment was private.
